    J. M. Barrie was born in 1860 in Scotland, just ten years before the death of another literary luminary, Charles Dickens. A playwright and a novelist, Barrie is best known today as the creator of Peter Pan, Captain Hook, and the elusive Neverland.
    Perhaps no story has undergone such a transformation as the tale of Peter Pan. As the play was first formulating under Barrie’s pen—long before it was a novel—you might have said Peter himself was the villain: a child, to be sure, but also wily, cunning, and as manipulative as they come. In fact, Captain Hook wasn’t even in the story! It was over time that the famous pirate found himself dueling the provocative Peter, and while Jas. Hook became the villain we know and love today, Peter never lost his impish, conniving nature with its eternal disdain for grownups.
    Possibly because of tragedy in his own life, Barrie’s works are imbued with a longing romanticization of childhood, as if his pen could take him places his future would never go again. He died in 1937, and though one might not call Barrie’s life easy or even particularly happy, his works possess a certain spark of carefree, childish wonder that the world will cherish for centuries to come.

Peter Pan: The Read-With-Me Edition

Love the original story and was looking forward to a chapter book to read in segments to my 6-year-old. The book starts from Mrs. Darling's perspective before she has any of the children. It also has a "run on sentence feel" which makes it pretty confusing to not only read out loud, but to follow along listening. There is a little bit of a better flow by chapter 3, but still not what was expected. We also got the secret garden by this author and hope it is not the same way.

I bought this for my godson. He mother is my best friend and this happens to be one of her all time favorite books from her childhood. Allowing them to read this together and define the hard/new words (definitions in the margins!) and discuss the book at the end of each chapter(there are discussion questions at the end of each section so you can further discuss and understand the material!) Im so excited for them to get this one. It will be nostalgic at the same rate it is new and exciting for her son.
