  • Lewis Carroll

Lewis Carroll—a.k.a. Charles Lutwidge Dodgson—was a professor at Oxford during the latter half of the 19th century. He became close friends with Alice Pleasance Liddell, one of the children of the dean of the college where Carroll lived (Oxford, you might not know, has many different colleges that make up one big university). He and other scholar friends would take Alice and her sisters on outings and make up games and stories for their amusement. At Alice’s urging, Carroll wrote some of the stories down. Later, with the encouragement of children’s author George MacDonald, he added to the story and submitted it for publication, where it was met with wild success.
Interestingly, Carroll never seemed quite satisfied with the book altogether. Edition after edition, he tweaked the language and requested corrections. He was especially particular about the illustrations, initially done by John Tenniel, which are imbued with a unique humor from both the author and the illustrator.
Today, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is one of the most famous children’s books of all time. It has been translated into nearly one hundred languages and has inspired countless stage, television, and movie productions. But perhaps the best way to enjoy it is right here on the printed page, where puns and wordplay shine their brightest—and just like Carroll probably would have wanted.
