About the book
The miraculous founding of America was not accomplished by a handful of people; it required the heart, soul, and grit of an entire nation. Today, we rightfully honor the efforts of the Founding Fathers, but what about everyone else who sacrificed for the cause? Introducing Forgotten Founders, the inspiring book of stories about the heroic women, African Americans, Native Americans, immigrants, and others who played pivotal roles in America's birth. Make no mistake: these were no historical footnotes. These were brave men and women—soldiers, spies, housewives, physicians, musicians—without whom the war simply could never have been won and the new republic never begun.
Readers will meet Sybil Ludington, the sixteen-year-old girl who rode all night to warn of a British attack (and didn't get caught!); Nancy Hart: the indomitable woman who captured six Loyalist soldiers; Cuffee Wells Saunders, the talented physician who won his freedom and saved lives serving in the Continental Army; Phyllis Wheatley, the gifted Black poet whose work was praised by Voltaire and George Washington; Deborah Sampson, the colonial woman who dressed as a man to enlist in the Continental Army; Peter Salem, the former slave who became the hero of the Battle of Bunker Hill; and many more! Read, learn, and discover in beautiful new ways that America's origin story really is everybody's story.

Extremely high quality book that is clearly meticulously researched, telling stories of "forgotten founders" during the Revolutionary time period of America's history. We love it!
Amazing! Wonderful selection of important historical figures who don't get enough representation in many textbooks with great illustrations and kid-friendly syntax.
This book is beautifully illustrated and packed with great content. We love hearing these forgotten hero stories and giving honor to their lives in our literature.
I teach homeschoolers at my co-op 7th grade -12th grade. We are all excited about these books. Although my students are older the wonderful artwork and information is laid out so well. They are able to take this information and dig deeper. It also provides a great deal more than our US History for high schoolers. These are people in this book ok that should be known as easily as George Washington. Never be afraid to get a book younger than your students as a well put together book as this will open a world to them outside the box many textbooks put students in.
This book I has been the perfect addition to our homeschool history curriculum as we study the Revolutionary War. The page spreads are eye catching and packed with information which is just the right amount for middle and upper elementary students (2-5th grades) and I appreciate the ‘Think Deeper’ questions that appear on the spreads.
Super terrific history book. Enjoyed reading about forgotten historical figures. The illustrations and layout felt fresh.
Probably most appropriate for 4th -7th grades.
The quality of all of our B+P books are swoon-worthy, from the lustrous color to the gold foil to the impeccable design. They beg to be touched and read. But of all of them so far, this one is extra engaging and approachable. Each spread is rich with illustrations, a short story and interesting side notes; you can't help but want to read one more. A wonderful addition to our home library!
I have not read the whole book but just skimming through, my first impressions are that the books are quality. The binding is tight, the paper is thick, the illustrations are beautiful and printed beautifully. The content provides just enough information to be suitable for a wide range of ages. This is going to be our before bed reading with my 13 yo because I'm too tired for anything longer at night.
While the book is phenomenal, the customer service is beyond lacking. This book was in my 2nd purchase made with Bushel and a Peck, and took much longer than originally anticipated (pre sale book dates changed and pushed out further without being told), now I'm awaiting any update on my 3rd order bought 10 days ago. All items, when purchased, were in stock and according to their site would ship in 1-2 business days. I emailed their customer service, messaged on Facebook and Instagram to no avail. Love the books, have definitely lost faith in the company which is a shame seeing as I have bought 24 books over a span of 3 orders and 2 orders being a bit of a mess with no communication.
Store owner replied:
Hi Sarah, thank you so much for telling us about the trouble you've had. How frustrating that must have been! We can't apologize enough. I normally hear wonderful things about our customer service—this is definitely not the experience we want to provide. I'm glad you told us about the pre-orders. Our pre-order system does send out email updates, but not everyone appears to get them, and we're working on trying to fix that. Could you email me at davidandstephanie@bushelandpeckbooks.com? I'd love to hear more about your experience and how we can make improvements. —David
These books are beautiful, and so very well written! They are engaging and appeal to my 8 year old and 11 year old, and I believe would as well to an even wider range. Gems of history that are hard to come by are presented so well. I am so glad I got these books!
I was honestly unsure at first. The front made it look a bit woke? But opening book it had 0 agenda and nothing but wonderful facts of unknown players in history. Amazing resource.
